Char is mainly an oil painter, but sometimes use pastels and watercolors. Her interests lie mostly in plein air landscape painting, intensifying color and value and striving for a good design and composition. She loves the northern California landscape with its intricacies and drama, plus the huge variety of subject matter. She feels fortunate to live in area that encompasses all manner of scenes such as lavender fields, vineyards, country farms, and city life.
Her other subject matter includes living things: people, animals, fish, and anything else with character. Her current pieces feature people in their everyday pursuits. Farmers’ markets are especially good subjects. Occasionally, she does a commissioned piece of someone’s pet or a portrait of a person or family. These commissions are a challenge, but she loves successfully capturing a likeness and a personality.
