Enameling Workshops: We are looking for an experienced instructor and collecting a list of interested students!
Enameling, "Glass on Metal" by Cathy Hazel
About Enameling: Enameling is the decorative technique of fusing glass to metal. Very similar in many ways to fusing glaze to ceramics, but the firing duration is only minutes, not hours! Vitreous enamels have been used by craftspeople since ancient times because they can serve as substitutes for precious gemstones in jewelry. The art form has developed over the centuries and now includes a wide variety of forms and techniques. The basic procedures can be very simple; sift powdered glass on metal and fire in a small kiln for 2 to 3 minutes at 1,500 degrees. The glass slumps and fuses to the metal. Some of the techniques that artists engage in include Cloisonné, where small cells, or cloisons, are created with thin strips of metal. The cells are slightly filled with dampened enamels and fired. This step is repeated many times until the cells are full. The piece is sanded and finished to the artist’s desire, sometimes with a brilliant shine and sometimes with rich matte finish, and many stages in between. The “sift and dump” method creates a painterly feel. The metal piece is painted with a clear adhesive, often an oil. The enamel is sifted over the entire piece and then tapped on its side. The loose enamel falls away and leaves a design. The piece is fired and the process is repeated to add depth and shading. This process is also fondly called “the glitter and glue method”. Other methods – Plique-a-jour, uses capillary action to fill small cells made of wire. The cells have no backing, so the finished piece resembles miniature stained glass. Champleve uses etching acids, engraving and embossing to create recesses that are filled with damp enamel. Basse Taille is a technique where the artist uses beautiful transparent enamels over textured metal.
If you are interested in an Enameling Workshop: Send an email to the instructor cathyonarch@sbcglobal.net or the Calistoga Art Center info@calistogaartcenter.org to let us know you are interested. You will be contacted with more information and to consider various weekend dates once we have 10 interested students.

About “Precious Metal Clay” “Precious Metal Clay” is a product developed in Japan from recycling the silver from exposed photography, medical and veterinary film.Gold metal clay is recycled from electronics and post mortem dental work. The silver and gold are extracted and then mixed with a clay like medium to produce a pliable clay material and slip. The silver and gold clay can be used employing any of a variety of hand building techniques much in the same way as using conventional clay, just on a smaller scale. After firing to a temperature of 1500 – 1565 degrees, the clay medium burns away, shrinking the fired piece by 12-15% and leaving a piece of art which is 99.9 % pure silver or gold.
